COLLEGE PARK, MD. — Researchers at the University of Maryland reported yesterday that citizens of the New Confederacy are estimated to be the largest group of immigrants illegally present in the United States.

“With the U.S. Congress and the Ocasio-Cortez administration acting quickly to resurrect the mechanisms for granting asylum and legal residency that were largely destroyed during the Fascist Period, many of those noncitizens who were previously undocumented are now legally present in the country,” wrote Professors Fatima Nasir and Ronald T. Sawyer. “In contrast, New Confederate nationals are in violation of U.S. immigration laws in substantial numbers.”

The January 2026 secession agreement provided for liberal consideration of family reunification and cross-border property ownership, with near-term allowances of international travel for school and work in border regions. However, both countries agreed to strict enforcement of unauthorized immigration.

Based on U.S. Department of Immigration and Guestwork data, Nasir and Sawyer found that the majority of New Confederate nationals in deportation proceedings did not raise a credible claim of asylum or family reunification.

“In our sample of more than 1,000 immigration filings, the noncitizens commonly stated that they did not want to live in the New Confederacy anymore, as their quality of life was worse,” the researchers wrote. “But that consideration was intentionally omitted from the Secession Agreement’s immigration framework.”

A spokesperson for DIG said that departmental leadership would discuss the findings and make recommendations to Congress about how to better secure the porous southern border with the New Confederacy.
