The Alternate Times began in January 2029, after the election of a Democratic president prompted nearly two dozen states to secede. Rather than seek to reunite, the United States and the New Confederacy now live side-by-side in an uneasy truce. Our publisher, Mary Sue Carmichael (pictured) vowed to fully and accurately cover the news from both countries as a public service to the citizens of both nations.
