Someone has to say it: We told you so.
During the Fascist Period, a groundswell of people in the U.S. supported the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It was a view shared across the ideological spectrum, not just those on the left.
Yet, moderates in office and in the consultant class tried to tamp down calls to abolish ICE, even as their constituents were being brutalized on a routine basis by masked terrorists.
Today, not only does ICE not exist, but neither does the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. And of course, the moderates were proven wrong.
Aside from the fact that Driving While Brown is no longer a possible death sentence, there is clearly no swarm of undocumented immigration through “open borders.” In fact, the government’s statistics recently showed (ironically) that unauthorized immigration from the famously tough-on-migrants New Confederacy is the big problem.
Plus, people feel safer. A recent Gallup poll found that the U.S. public’s concerns about crime are at a 20-year low, and immigration is nowhere close to a priority. In fact, more than 50% of poll respondents approve or strongly approve of how the Ocasio-Cortez administration is handling both of those issues.
To recap: People wanted to abolish ICE. The government listened. And now the public is content. As someone who spent many years in politics alongside people who pretended that triangulation and compromise were more important than anything else, I hope they see what a waste of time that was.
