BATON ROUGE, LA. — Louisiana became the first state in the New Confederacy to make it a crime to be transgender, after Gov. Jeff Landry signed the Protecting Women’s Restrooms and Sports Act today.
“For Louisianans who are mentally ill, we encourage you to get help. But if you persist in this dangerous and evil transgender ideology, we have no choice but to protect our children and our communities,” said Landry.
The New Confederate Civil Liberties Alliance denounced the law and said it would sue to block it from taking effect. However, University of Chicago law Prof. Dennis McCrimmon observed that the New Confederate Constitution specifically allows for discriminatory legislation on account of sexual orientation and gender identity, among other characteristics.
“States can choose to enact protections beyond what the federal constitution allows, but Louisiana is doing exactly what the New Confederate Founders intended,” he said.
The Louisiana law imposes up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine for “outward public manifestations of transgender identity.” For those who knowingly “advocate for, or attempt to convert another to” being trans, the law provides for up to 10 years in prison.
The U.S. Department of State quickly announced a travel advisory on social media, warning LGBTQ citizens about dangerous conditions in Louisiana.
