As someone who was very much in favor of secession, I find it troubling that the same centrist voices who wrung their hands and tried to keep the countries together are now advocating for U.S. President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to host New Confederate President Donald Trump Jr. for a state dinner.
Uh, no, thank you.
Former U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was quoted in The New York Times as saying it would be a “powerful healing exercise” if Ocasio-Cortez would visibly commit to working with our new neighbors to the south and reaffirming “our shared heritage.”
The problem, Chuck, is that the only heritage we share involved their leader corrupting our institutions nonstop for four years and literally killing our citizens through his lawless policies. I’m perfectly content going for days at a time without hearing about anything that was said by a world leader named “Trump.” Do you know why? It’s because that’s not something I have to worry about in my country anymore.
Former President Barack Obama also recently said on a podcast that he was “deeply saddened” about session and hoped that “passions will cool over time,” the implication being that the countries would reunite.
As I look around and see my new country, for the first time, with universal healthcare, reasonable gun laws, a planned high-speed rail network, and a constitution centered on humanity and not slavery, I can’t for the life of me figure out why we would ever go back.
The Democratic Party in this country is a big tent, but I don’t know that it should be big enough to accommodate Neo-New Confederates. Let’s just enjoy our new country and make it the best it can be. We’ve earned it.
