NEW YORK, N.Y. — U.S. Vice President Pete Buttigieg said that there are criminal indictments waiting in the wings for any members of the former Trump administration who step foot onto U.S. soil.
“Our Justice Department has been very busy building legal cases against everyone who aided and abetted during the Fascist Period,” Buttigieg said during an appearance on “The Tonight Show.”
“Obviously, we are limited in what we can do because the high-level actors, the people contriving and directing the atrocities, have fled to the New Confederacy. But we have indictments ready to go and we’re very vigilant about taking them into custody as soon as they renter the country,” he added.
While some of the Ocasio-Cortez administration’s progressive supporters have publicly criticized the White House for not moving more aggressively to retaliate against officials in the former United States of America, Buttigieg’s comments marked the first time the administration has confirmed that the government is in a position to criminally prosecute.
“Who are we talking about here? Who all’s on the ‘wanted’ posters?” asked host Michelle Obama.
“Well, we don’t necessarily want to advertise who all is facing charges or what those necessarily are,” responded Buttigieg. “But look, all of us who lived through the Fascist Period know who the perpetrators are. Their crimes were, in many ways, committed openly and brazenly. And while they should feel confident that they will get a fair trial here, they should absolutely not sleep easy knowing that we’re prepared to hold them accountable.”
Buttigieg also spoke to Obama about his signature initiative as vice president: rebuilding federally funded scientific and medical research infrastructure.
