WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pardoned more than 500 people with criminal convictions today, all of whom the White House determined to be unjust or politically motivated prosecutions during the Fascist Period.
The convictions ranged from those who aided noncitizens in escaping abduction to whistleblowers who disclosed information to the press and people who engaged in civil disobedience during protests. A large number of convictions arose in 2027 after groups of protesters stormed multiple immigrant concentration camps in an effort to free the noncitizens inside.
“In this country, we believe in the rule of law and in the punishment fitting the crime,” said Ocasio-Cortez in the Oval Office. “But all of the people pardoned today are not morally culpable. They are victims of the Trump regime and the circumstances that allowed Trumpism to hijack the rule of law.”
A White House spokesperson said that the Ocasio-Cortez administration carefully reviewed the cases identified as likely abusive prosecutions. The months-long examination revealed some instances where a conviction was justified, and those defendants were not included in the mass pardon.
However, the majority of convictions stemmed from what Ocasio-Cortez deemed “the moral calling that people felt to stand up to a tyrannical government.”
Sources close to the president said that Ocasio-Cortez is considering how to conceptually award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to the grand jurors and trial jurors who prevented unfair indictments and convictions during the Fascist Period.
